Demand immediate lifting of paddy and extension of token validity; protest withdrawn after Tahsildar’s assurance Khariar, June 30 Hundreds of farmers staged a massive protest on Tuesday by blocking National Highway-353 near Tukla Paddy Mandi under Khariar block in Nuapada district, alleging large-scale irregularities in paddy procurement and delay in lifting their produce despite the expiry of procurement tokens. The highway blockade brought traffic to a complete standstill, with hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road for several hours, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. According to the agitating farmers, thousands of quintals of paddy have been lying in the mandi for several days as millers have failed to lift the stock. They alleged that although the validity of procurement tokens issued to many farmers is about to expire, neither the district administration nor the Food Supplies Department has taken any effective steps to resolve the issue. Demanding immediate procurement of the remaining paddy, extension of the token validity period, and a transparent and efficient procurement process, the farmers warned that they would continue their agitation until they received a written assurance from the authorities. On receiving information about the protest, local police and administrative officials rushed to the spot and held discussions with the agitating farmers. Later, the Khariar Tahsildar visited the Tukla Mandi and assured the farmers that the lifting of paddy would be expedited and the token-related issues would be resolved at the earliest. Following the Tahsildar’s assurance, the farmers withdrew the highway blockade, and vehicular movement on National Highway-353 resumed. However, the protesters cautioned that if the administration fails to fulfil its promises promptly, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days.

However, when they reached his office chamber in the afternoon, they found that Mr. Meher was not present. Despite waiting for a considerable time, the teachers could not meet the retiring officer. The unexpected absence reportedly caused disappointment among those who had come to offer their farewell wishes, and several teachers expressed their dissatisfaction over the situation. Meanwhile, the occasion also marked the joining of Pabitra Majhi as the new Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator (CRCC). During the programme, the participants resolved to create awareness among the public about the harmful effects of substance abuse, protect youth from falling prey to addiction, curb the spread of narcotic substances, and actively contribute towards creating a healthy, safe, and drug-free society. Speaking on the occasion, police officials said that drug addiction affects not only an individual but also disrupts families and poses a serious threat to society as a whole. They observed that substance abuse often leads to social crimes, domestic conflicts, and the destruction of the future of young people. Nuapada: 01/07 While the nation celebrated National Doctors’ Day on Tuesday, a contrasting scene unfolded at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Nuapada. Instead of commemorating the occasion with celebrations, doctors gathered in a peaceful sit-in protest, demanding justice, security, and professional dignity. Responding to the statewide call given by the Odisha Medical Services Association (OMSA), doctors in the district jointly urged the State Government to fulfil their eight-point charter of demands. Carrying the slogan “Together for Fairness & Respect,” the protesting doctors stated that although patient care remains their foremost responsibility, several long-pending and legitimate service-related issues have remained unresolved for years. They expressed concern over inadequate security at healthcare institutions, delayed career progression, salary-related issues, and other service benefits. OMSA has submitted an eight-point charter of demands to the State Government. The key demands include implementation of the Central Dynamic Assured Career Progression (DACP) scheme for all doctors, including the dental cadre; enhancement of salaries for contractual doctors; regularisation of ad hoc doctors; restructuring of the medical cadre; approval of specialist incentive benefits; early resolution of pension-related issues; administrative reforms, including the abolition of Level-15; and strengthening security arrangements in all government hospitals to ensure the safety of doctors and healthcare staff. The protesting doctors reiterated that their commitment to patient care remains unwavering. However, they said that repeated incidents of attacks on doctors, an unsafe working environment, and unresolved service grievances had compelled them to launch the agitation. They particularly stressed the urgent need for effective security measures in hospitals to safeguard medical professionals and other healthcare workers. OMSA representatives warned that if the State Government fails to take prompt and positive action on their eight legitimate demands, the peaceful agitation could intensify across Odisha in the coming days. They observed that doctors being forced to protest on National Doctors’ Day itself raises serious questions about the prevailing healthcare administration and the government’s response to the concerns of medical professionals.
