Childhood Memories Return with the Taste of Jamun: Friends Reconnect with Nature
Sinapali, June 28 In today’s fast-paced digital era, where mobile phones and social media dominate daily life, many simple joys of village childhood are gradually fading into memory. One such cherished tradition is gathering under a jamun tree during the monsoon, plucking the ripe purple fruits with friends, and reliving moments of pure happiness. Years ago, the arrival of the jamun season would fill village lanes with laughter. Children and youngsters would rush to nearby trees, some throwing ropes over the branches to shake the tree while others spread mosquito nets or cloth underneath to collect the fruits without damaging them. The real delight came later—mixing the freshly picked jamun with salt, red chilli powder, and coriander leaves to create a spicy, tangy treat. Purple-stained tongues, smiling faces, endless conversations under the shade of trees, and carefree afternoons formed some of the most treasured memories of rural life. Reviving this fading tradition, a group of young men from Sinapali recently gathered at Moolbasa village to celebrate the joy of nature. Using a rope to gently shake the branches and spreading a mosquito net beneath the tree to protect the fruits, they collected fresh jamun before enjoying it together with the traditional blend of salt, chilli, and coriander. The gathering not only offered a delicious seasonal experience but also brought back countless memories of childhood and strengthened the bond of friendship. Not long ago, children would eagerly wait for the jamun season, spending entire days outdoors in search of fruit-laden trees. Calls from parents often went unheard as they immersed themselves in nature’s playground. However, with rapid urbanisation, shrinking green spaces, and increasing dependence on digital entertainment, such experiences are becoming increasingly rare. The tradition of gathering around jamun trees, sharing fruits, laughter, and companionship is slowly disappearing from village life. Beyond its unique sweet-and-tangy taste, jamun (Indian blackberry) is also known for its remarkable health benefits. Rich in Vitamin C, iron, calcium, fibre, and antioxidants, it is believed to help regulate blood sugar levels, improve digestion, strengthen immunity, and keep the body refreshed. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, its seeds, leaves, and bark have long been valued for their medicinal properties. Local residents believe that a jamun tree is much more than a fruit-bearing tree—it represents memories, friendship, community bonding, and a deep connection with nature. They feel that unless such native fruit trees are protected and more are planted, future generations may never experience the simple happiness that once defined rural childhood. The nostalgic gathering was attended by Naresh Meher (Naru), Jitendra Prasad Meher (Jitu), Pramod Meher, Dambarudhar Meher (Chhotu), Suryabhanu Meher, Krishna Meher, Hem Sagar Meher, Luru Meher, Rinku Meher, Birat Meher, Malaya Meher, along with several other friends. While the sweet and tangy flavour of jamun may last only for a season, the memories it creates remain etched in the heart forever—reminding us that sometimes the greatest happiness lies not in technology, but beneath the shade of a village tree with friends.

Administration Remained Silent Despite Media Reports
Thousands of Paddy Bags Soaked in Heavy Rain at Karlakote Mandi; Farmers Fear Huge Losses Boden, June 28 Despite repeated warnings from farmers and media reports highlighting the poor condition of Karlakote Paddy Procurement Centre (Mandi), the administration allegedly failed to take timely action. As a result, thousands of paddy bags stored at the mandi under Boden block in Nuapada district were soaked in Saturday’s heavy rainfall, leaving farmers worried about severe financial losses. On June 26, several newspapers had reported the disorder at Karlakote Mandi, drawing attention to the delay in lifting procured paddy, shortage of transport vehicles, and the large number of paddy bags lying in the open without adequate protection. However, according to farmers, no effective measures were taken by the concerned authorities despite these warnings. Saturday’s heavy rain turned those concerns into reality. A large quantity of paddy remained stacked inside the mandi premises due to the lack of timely transportation and insufficient storage facilities. Since there was inadequate warehouse space, hundreds of paddy bags had been left exposed under the open sky. The heavy downpour drenched the stocks, raising fears that the quality of the grain may deteriorate significantly. Farmers said they had repeatedly urged the authorities to arrange transport vehicles and expedite the lifting process, but their appeals went unanswered. They now fear that any deterioration in grain quality could lead to deductions during procurement, causing them substantial financial losses. Many distressed farmers were seen expressing deep concern over the fate of the produce they had cultivated through months of hard work. The incident has once again raised serious questions over the efficiency of the paddy procurement system, particularly at a time when farmer-related issues in the district have already drawn public attention. Farmers have demanded immediate transportation of the remaining paddy, a proper assessment of the rain-damaged stock, adequate compensation for losses, and permanent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. A key question now being raised is whether this damage could have been avoided had the administration acted promptly after the earlier warnings. Farmers are demanding accountability and asking whether the government will compensate them for the losses caused by the alleged administrative inaction.

Incomplete Road Work Raises Safety Concerns
Lack of Safety Measures on Khariar–Sinapali Road Sparks Demand for Action Against Contractor Sinapali, June 27 The ongoing widening and construction of the Khariar–Sinapali main road has become a major cause of concern, with incomplete work posing a serious threat to commuters and local residents. While the stretch from Sinapali to Nehena Milpada has been almost completed, roadwork between Nehena Milpada and Khariar, covering nearly three kilometres, has remained unfinished for more than three months. The contractor has excavated both sides of the road to a depth of nearly two to four feet but left the work incomplete, creating hazardous conditions for road users. The delay has also triggered resentment among local residents. The situation has become more alarming due to the absence of basic safety measures. No barricades, warning signs, or caution lights have been installed at the construction site. As a result, motorists and pedestrians, especially during night hours, are facing a high risk of accidents. Locals alleged that several mishaps have already occurred because of open trenches and construction materials lying scattered on the road. Adding to the inconvenience, the excavated stretch has become extremely dusty, causing discomfort to daily commuters as well as families living along the roadside. Residents say the dust pollution has made travel difficult and is affecting their daily lives. Despite the growing public concern, neither the contractor nor the concerned authorities have taken effective steps to improve safety or expedite the work. Local residents have demanded immediate installation of proper safety measures, speedy completion of the road project, and strict action against the contractor for negligence. Attempts were made to obtain a response from officials of the Roads and Buildings Department, Khariar, but they could not be contacted.

From Black Badges to Work Boycott: Revenue Field Officers Warn of Mass Leave from July 1
Nuapada, June 28 The Nuapada District Revenue Field Officers’ Association has intensified its protest against the State Government over the non-fulfilment of its long-pending demands. As part of the first phase of the agitation, members of the association have been performing their duties while wearing black badges since June 22. The association has warned that if their demands are not addressed by June 30, all Revenue Field Officers will proceed on mass leave and launch an indefinite work boycott from July 1. A total of 44 Revenue Field Officers across Nuapada district have joined the agitation. The protest has received the support of Revenue Inspectors (RIs), Additional Revenue Inspectors (ARIs), and Revenue Supervisors, with demonstrations being held at all Tahasil and Revenue Inspector offices across the district. The ongoing protest has already started affecting the normal functioning of revenue offices. The association’s key demands include restructuring of the revenue cadre, provision of basic infrastructure such as uninterrupted electricity and internet connectivity in all revenue offices, payment of permanent travelling allowance, filling up of vacant Group-‘D’ posts, and increasing staff strength to reduce the growing workload. According to the association, the shortage of manpower has significantly increased work pressure, making it difficult to deliver timely public services. The association alleged that despite repeatedly bringing these issues to the notice of the State Government and the district administration, no concrete action has been taken. As a mark of protest, members have also withdrawn from all official communication groups. They have appealed to the government to resolve their demands by June 30, failing which they will begin mass leave and suspend official work from July 1. The agitation is being led by District President Rambilas Sagaria, Vice-Presidents Kiran Sahu and Rakhuram Mashra, General Secretary Kshirasindhu Bag, Joint Secretary Ramnath Mishra, Organising Secretaries Ananta Nial and Ajit Naik, Cultural Secretary Arun Agrawal, Office Secretary Rabina Majhi, Women Secretary Madhumita Padhi, Media Secretary Premananda Sunani, Treasurer Surendra Meher, along with Mukesh Kumar Majhi, Umakanta Bhatta, and other members of the association. The association reiterated that unless the government responds positively, the agitation will escalate into a complete work boycott from July 1.

Thousands of Paddy Bags Soaked in Heavy Rain at Mandis
Thousands of Paddy Bags Soaked in Heavy Rain at Mandis Farmers Express Concern, Demand Immediate Procurement and Protection Measures Nuapada/Khariar: June 28 Heavy rainfall on Saturday evening caused extensive damage to paddy stocks stored at various procurement mandis across Nuapada district, leaving thousands of paddy bags soaked and raising serious concerns among farmers. At the Khariar mandi alone, nearly 60,000 bags of paddy were stored, with a significant number kept in the open due to a lack of adequate covered storage. As rainwater accumulated in the mandi premises, many bags, particularly those stacked at the bottom, remained submerged for several hours and were badly damaged. On Sunday, farmers were seen separating and turning over the wet paddy bags to dry them. According to mandi officials, water was pumped out using motor pumps, but the prolonged waterlogging had already caused considerable damage to the stored paddy. Farmers alleged that despite the damage being caused by rain and inadequate storage arrangements, they would ultimately be blamed for the deterioration in grain quality. They also feared that rice millers might use the reduced quality as a reason to impose arbitrary deductions during procurement, resulting in significant financial losses. The affected farmers have urged the government and district administration to ensure the immediate lifting of paddy from the mandis and to take urgent measures to protect the remaining stocks. They warned that if the rains continue and timely action is not taken, the extent of damage and farmers’ losses could increase further.
