SHADOW OF INTOXICATION OVER PATALAGANGA! Empty Cough-Syrup Bottles Found on Hill
*Concern over alleged substance abuse at the sacred Shaivite shrine; locals demand immediate surveillance by administration and Excise Department* BODEN: 24:08, Patalaganga, a sacred Shaivite shrine under Boden Block of Nuapada district, is a unique blend of faith, spirituality and natural beauty. Every year during the holy month of Shravan, thousands of devotees and Kanwariyas visit the site. Its temples, hills and religious traditions have made Patalaganga an important pilgrimage and tourist destination. However, allegations of possible substance abuse at this sacred place have now raised serious concern. Empty cough-syrup bottles are reportedly being found scattered on the surrounding hills, near different temples and particularly around the Alekh Math area. Local residents claim that piles of empty bottles can be seen at several places. The sight has raised several questions: Who is consuming these syrups? Where are they coming from? Are they being used for medical purposes or for intoxication? Are some youths visiting the shrine misusing such medicines? Locals have demanded a proper investigation to establish the facts. It is important to note that different formulations are sold under the ‘Corex’ name, and an empty bottle alone cannot establish that it was used as an intoxicant. However, if any recovered syrup contains opioid ingredients such as codeine and is being misused for intoxication without medical advice, the matter is certainly serious. Misuse of opioid-containing medicines can cause drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing and dependence. The risk can become even more serious when such medicines are combined with alcohol or other intoxicating substances. Challenge of Protecting the Youth from Addiction If substance abuse is taking place at a religious site like Patalaganga, it is not merely a concern for the sanctity of the shrine but also for society and the future of the younger generation. There are also allegations from some local people that cannabis is being consumed at certain locations around the shrine. These allegations too require impartial verification. No particular group or Kanwariya should be blamed without evidence. At the same time, such complaints should not be ignored. When Will the Administration Take Notice? Regular police patrolling, surveillance on the hills, CCTV cameras, adequate lighting and anti-drug awareness programmes are urgently needed at Patalaganga. Authorities should also conduct lawful inspections of medicine shops if there are reasonable concerns regarding the unauthorized sale or misuse of cough syrups. The temple management, district administration, police, Excise Department and Drugs Control authorities need to work together to prevent the shrine from becoming a place of substance abuse. Patalaganga is not a place for intoxication; it is a place of faith. Protecting its sanctity, environment and religious atmosphere, while keeping the younger generation away from addiction, is a collective responsibility. Awareness Message Cough syrups containing codeine or other controlled ingredients should never be used for intoxication or without proper medical advice. Addiction is not entertainment—it can destroy health, families and the future of the younger generation.

Four Liquor Outlets Near Hospital and School Spark Protest Threat in Gidhmal: Villagers Demand Immediate Closure, Warn of Road Blockade if Action Is Delayed
SINAPALI: Villagers of Gidhmal under Hatibandha Gram Panchayat in Sinapali block of Nuapada district have demanded the immediate closure of four liquor outlets operating in the village. They have alleged that the presence of liquor outlets near a hospital and a school is creating concern over public safety and disturbing the social environment. According to the villagers, one liquor outlet run by Uddhav Meher is located in front of the hospital, while another allegedly run by Gaur Meher is also situated in front of the hospital. A third outlet, allegedly operated by Gobinda Bhoi, is located behind the hospital, while the fourth, allegedly run by Dingar Nag, is situated behind the Nodal School. The villagers claim that crowds of intoxicated persons and incidents of nuisance are frequently witnessed around these places. The location of the outlets near the hospital and school has particularly raised concerns regarding the safety of women, girls and schoolchildren. Villagers also alleged that excessive drinking is contributing to disturbances in the locality and could have an adverse impact on the younger generation. They have urged the authorities to verify the allegations and take appropriate action in accordance with the law. The villagers have reportedly informed the Sinapali police station about the issue. They said the police assured them that necessary action would be taken. However, they alleged that when they approached the Excise Department to submit a complaint, the office was found locked and no official was available even after they waited for a considerable period. The villagers have demanded an immediate inspection of all four liquor outlets and appropriate legal action if violations are found. They have also sought a permanent solution to the alleged problems arising from liquor sales near the hospital and school. The villagers have warned that if the administration and Excise Department fail to take prompt action, they will unite and launch a protest on the road. The matter has now drawn attention in the area, with residents awaiting the authorities’ response.

A Divine Display of Devotion on the Last Monday of Shravan
*50 Kanwariyas Crawl Nearly a Kilometre from Udanti River to Sinapali Shiva Temple* SINAPALI: The last Monday of the holy month of Shravan witnessed a remarkable display of faith and devotion in Sinapali block of Nuapada district, as around 50 Kanwariyas undertook an unusual pilgrimage from the banks of the Udanti River to the Shiva Temple at Sinapali. Carrying sacred water from the Udanti River, the devotees crawled nearly one kilometre on the road as part of their religious vow. Chanting “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bol Bam”, they made their way towards the temple with unwavering devotion, despite the physical hardship involved. The Kanwariyas, mostly from Kapsi village, first gathered near the Udanti River, where they performed prayers and rituals before collecting the sacred water. Carrying the water-filled Kanwariyas on their shoulders, they then began their journey towards the Sinapali Shiva Temple. The most striking part of the pilgrimage was the sight of the devotees crawling on their knees for nearly a kilometre. Although the journey caused physical exhaustion, their determination remained undiminished. With the name of Lord Shiva on their lips and a firm resolve in their hearts, they continued towards the temple to offer the sacred water to Mahadev. The spiritual atmosphere intensified as villagers gathered along both sides of the road. Women and men encouraged the devotees with conch shells, bells and traditional ululation. The continuous chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bol Bam” filled the surroundings with a deeply devotional ambience. After completing the arduous journey, the Kanwariyas finally reached the Sinapali Shiva Temple and performed Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva with the sacred water collected from the Udanti River. The temple premises reverberated with devotional chants as the devotees offered prayers for the happiness, peace, health and prosperity of their families, loved ones and society. The unique pilgrimage was not merely a religious procession but a powerful expression of the devotees’ deep faith, spiritual commitment and determination. Their willingness to endure physical hardship to fulfil their vow touched the hearts of many onlookers. The remarkable journey of the Kapsi Kanwariyas added a special spiritual fervour to the last Monday of Shravan in Sinapali. Their extraordinary act of devotion, marked by faith, discipline and sacrifice, became a memorable sight for the local community and reflected the deep-rooted religious traditions of the region.
