Khuntia–Barabakhara Road Turns Into a Death Trap
Villagers, Students Struggle to Travel on Pothole-Ridden Road; Residents Demand Immediate Repair Kalahandi, Kokasara, August 10: Despite decades having passed since Independence, the road connectivity to several rural habitations continues to remain a major concern. The Khuntia–Barabakhara road under Khuntia Gram Panchayat of Kokasara block in Kalahandi district has allegedly turned into a virtual death trap due to its deplorable condition. The narrow road is riddled with potholes, mud and uneven stretches, making daily commuting extremely difficult for the residents of Barabakhara Pada. Despite being used regularly by two-wheelers, other vehicles and pedestrians, the road has reportedly received little attention from elected representatives, the Gram Panchayat and the block administration. The situation has become particularly difficult for school-going children. Following the closure of the earlier primary school in the locality, students are now compelled to travel around 2 to 3 kilometres to attend schools at Khuntia, including Khuntia Dharuapada Primary School and the Government Upgraded High School. During the rainy season, the condition of the road deteriorates further. The pothole-filled and muddy surface makes walking and cycling hazardous. Residents said that people, particularly students, frequently lose their footing, while cyclists and motorcycle riders have also faced accidents while negotiating the damaged stretches. The poor road condition has caused considerable hardship for residents travelling for education, work, healthcare and other essential needs. The villagers allege that despite repeated difficulties, no concrete initiative has yet been taken to permanently resolve the problem. Residents of Barabakhara Pada have urged the Khuntia Gram Panchayat and Kokasara Block Administration to take immediate steps for the repair and proper construction of the Khuntia–Barabakhara road. They have appealed to the authorities to address the issue on priority, considering the safety of schoolchildren and daily commuters.
