Sinapali, July 16
Uninterrupted rainfall failed to dampen the spirit and devotion of thousands of devotees who gathered for the annual Rath Yatra at the historic Shri Jagannath Temple in Sinapali on Thursday. Despite the incessant rain since early morning, devotees from nearby villages as well as the neighbouring state of Chhattisgarh thronged the temple to seek the blessings of the Holy Trinity and participate in the grand chariot festival.
Following the traditional rituals and morning worship at the temple, the ceremonial Pahandi Bije of the deities was held in the afternoon. Thereafter, Bijaya Meher performed the sacred Chhera Pahanra ritual on the three chariots before the grand procession commenced. Amid the chants of “Haribol”, the rhythmic beats of traditional instruments, kirtan groups, and the joyous ululation of devotees, the entire town reverberated with an atmosphere of spiritual fervour.
One of the unique traditions of the Sinapali Rath Yatra is that Devi Subhadra’s Debadalana Chariot is pulled exclusively by women devotees. Continuing this age-old custom, hundreds of women enthusiastically participated in the chariot pulling this year, adding a distinctive cultural and devotional charm to the celebration.
According to local history, since the establishment of the Shri Jagannath Temple in Sinapali under the patronage of the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri, all rituals and ceremonies have been conducted in accordance with the traditions of Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri. The magnificent three-chariot procession has become a symbol of the region’s rich spiritual heritage, attracting thousands of devotees every year.
Keeping in view the massive turnout, the temple management committee and volunteers made elaborate arrangements for drinking water, first aid, crowd management, and other essential services, ensuring the festival concluded peacefully and in an orderly manner.
Apart from Sinapali, Rath Yatra was also celebrated with great devotion and discipline in several villages under the Sinapali block, including Brahmanpada, Hatibandha, Patielpada, Sagunbhadi, Singjhar, Kendumunda, Chalana, Gorla, Timanpur, Jamgaon, Gandabahali, Bargaon, Gambhariguda, and Arasapada. The celebrations once again reflected the deep-rooted faith of the people and the enduring cultural legacy of Lord Jagannath across the region.
